    Two snow leopard cubs were born at the Toronto Zoo overnight on May 13. The Toronto Zoo welcomed two baby snow leopards earlier this week after their mother, Jita, was pregnant for 97 days. In a release from the zoo Thursday, Jita went into labour this past Monday evening.
    It is estimated up to 6,000 snow leopards live in the wild in the snowy mountains of Central Asia, from China and Mongolia west to Afghanistan, India and Uzbekistan.     The cubs’ father, nine-year-old Pemba, was introduced to Jita in February as part of the snow leopard Species Survival Plan (SSP) and mating soon began.     The leopard is a solitary and territorial animal. It is typically shy and alert when crossing roadways and encountering oncoming vehicles, but may be emboldened to attack people or other animals when threatened. Adults associate only in the mating season.
